Christmas marks an important time for the Royal Family, with top royals getting together for food and the monarch making a festive speech – but it doesn’t always go to plan.

In 2020, King Charles and Camilla were forced to turn off comments on an Instagram post wishing the British public “a happy Christmas and better New Year” after it was flooded with angry trolls who lined up to fire abuse at the pair.

The cheerful festive post showed the royal couple dressed in casual clothes and smiling as they raised walking sticks to the camera at their home in Scotland.

But it didn’t go down well and brutal commentators, supposedly triggered by Netflix show The Crown, who fired off so much hate to the royal pair that aides had to ban anyone from being able to reply to the post.

Before comments were turned off, one wrote: "I hated Prince Charles and Camilla before season four of The Crown and the recent podcasts I’ve indulged in, but now I loathe them.

“I just saw their Christmas card and I am irrationally angry."

Whilst another posted online after the restrictions were introduced: “They disabled replies. He knew we would flood them with Diana."

It remains to be seen whether in the two years that has passed, with the passing of Queen Elizabeth, more turmoil with Harry and Meghan and Charles coming to the throne, people will be more receptive to his Christmas message.

King Charles is no stranger to hostility from the public, and was recently attacked with eggs thrown in his direction.

Fortunately, the monarch managed to avoid the launch and recovered to carry on meeting others in the crowd and shaking hands.
