A former security guard who shot and killed a man at a rally in Denver in October pleaded not guilty to murder Friday.
Denver prosecutors charged Matthew Dolloff with second-degree murder for shooting and killing 49-year-old Lee Keltner on Oct. 10. Dolloff was working as a security guard for 9News reporters at a “Patriot Rally” in Civic Center park when he and Keltner got into a dispute. Keltner dischraged pepper spray at Dolloff, who shot Keltner.
Doug Richards, Dolloff’s attorney, has previously argued that the 31-year-old acted in self-defense when he opened fire. The judge on Friday did not set a date for trial and said he would set one after the next hearing, scheduled for Aug. 2.
Richards on Friday said his office recently received new evidence from the district attorney’s office, including body camera footage from the incident as well as data from Keltner’s phone.
If convicted of second-degree murder, Dolloff faces a mandatory sentence of between 16 and 48 years in prison followed by five years on parole. He has been free on $500,000 bond since November.
Dolloff worked security jobs through Isborn Security Services. 9News contracted with Pinkerton for security services for the Oct. 10 rally, and Pinkerton subcontracted the job to Isborn Security. Dolloff was not licensed to work as a security guard in Denver.
