The mother of Russian double agent Sergei Skripal has died aged 92 in a Russian hospital after contracting Covid-19.

Elena Skripal’s death was announced by Viktoria Skripal, 48, Sergei’s niece, who was the pensioner’s main carer.

She died in a hospital in Yaroslavl, her home city, where she had been receiving oxygen after she was admitted on 30 December with a high fever and coronavirus symptoms.

Sergei has not seen his mother since he was poisoned along with his daughter Yulia in Salisbury in 2018

Viktoria herself had also contracted Covid-19.

Sergei Skripal – who had secretly spied for MI6 while working for the Russian GRU – had not seen his mother since he was released from a Russian jail and exchanged in a swap that also involved glamour agent Anna Chapman in 2010.

She had longed to see him again, and spoke out six months after he was poisoned with novichok by Russian agents.

She said: ‘I just want to see and hold my son again for one more time.

‘I want to hug him. I miss him so much. My eldest son is dead.

‘Sergei is the only son I have left and I love him.’

Viktoria said today that Elena had no way to contact Sergei nor his daughter Yulia, 36, who was also poisoned in the attack in Salisbury for which Britain blamed GRU agents.

She last saw her son in 2004, at his father’s funeral.

‘I remember it well,’ she said in 2018.

‘It was a such a sad occasion – I had no idea that would be the last time I would ever hold my son.’

Last month Viktoria disclosed a rare phone call from Yulia.

Yulia’s (pictured) health is ‘fully restored’ since her poisoning except for a problem focusing her eyes

She claimed Yulia told her that Sergei lives permanently with a medic in Britain after his nerve agent poisoning.

He needed a pipe in his throat following a tracheostomy, and requires constant medical care at home.

Yulia’s own health is ‘fully restored’, except for a problem focusing her eyes, she reportedly told Viktoria.
