Nationwide new cases jumped to 9,570 – topping 9,500 for the first time – the latest Covid figures from the health ministry showed. But fears are also growing in Olympic host city Tokyo, where 3,177 new infections were reported on Wednesday – a second straight daily record high. The continuing surge in Covid cases has placed huge pressure on hospitals in Tokyo, adding to fears over the Olympic Games, which have already been delayed by a year because of the surging pandemic.
