Myki readers are down on trams and at train stations across Melbourne after a system outage, with commuters being waved through the barriers and told not to tap on.
Metro Trains has apologised for the inconvenience and said a technical fault is to blame.

Card readers, which Victoria commuters use to tap on when travelling, began displaying “out of order” messages on trains, buses and trams on Thursday afternoon.
“We are aware of an issue with the ticketing system which is impacting the network. Our teams are currently investigating and our authorised officers have been advised of the issue. Sorry for the experience this afternoon,” Metro Trains wrote on Twitter.
The myki card system is due to expire in November and the government wants to improve the technology. It has invited rival operators to bid for the new contract when the $100-million-a-year agreement runs out.
Last month Premier Daniel Andrews threw his support behind a replacement for the myki card that allows commuters to use bank cards or smartphones on trams, trains and buses, as the state government looks for a new operator for the public transport ticketing system.
