Police launch probe as human remains are found by walker on beach close to historical burial site at exclusive seaside resort in West Sussex

Police have launched an investigation after human remains were found on a beach close to a historical burial site at an exclusive seaside resort.

The bones were found by a stunned walker at West Wittering in West Sussex on Monday. 

He immediately reported the body to Sussex Police, who later confirmed the remains are human. 

A spokesperson added the skeleton was found close to ‘an area where historical burial sites are located,’ though it is unclear how it was unearthed.

The remains were found in the coastal village of West Wittering, where celebrities such as Only Fools and Horses star Nicholas Lyndhurst own impressive beachside properties.

Other famous faces who own homes in or around the village include actress Kate Winslet, Rolling Stone Keith Richards and singer Michael Ball. 

Pathologists will now examine the skeleton in a bid to discover the age of the bones.

In a statement, Sussex Police said: ‘Specialist forensic teams recovered the bones and have confirmed the remains are human.

‘The discovery is currently being treated as unexplained and enquiries to identify the bones are ongoing.’

It was added that the skeleton was found close to ‘an area where historical burial sites are located’.
