Politician mocked for mixing up Nazi secret police with ‘Gazpacho’ in gaffe

A US congresswoman was brutally mocked after getting her very serious political comment confused with a chilled tomato soup.

Republican representative Majorie Taylor Greene attended an interview on One America News Network on Wednesday (February 9) and expressed her views on the government's use of Capitol Police.

But she triggered a wave of jokes on Twitter when she ranted about the "gazpacho police" – which people believed she wanted to say "Gestapo police", the Nazi secret police.

In the interview she told host Dan Ball: "Not only do we have the D.C jail, which is the D.C gulag, but now we have Nancy Pelosi’s gazpacho police spying on members of Congress, spying on the legislative work that we do, spying on our staff and spying on American citizens that want to come talk to their representatives."

Her mistake didn't go unnoticed and the internet was quick to fill with memes and jokes on the "soup spies".

One said: "Whatever you do, don’t get her started on the Luftwaffle."

Another wrote: "As you can tell, she’s not souper great at her job."

A third added: "The use of gazpacho tactics by Nancy Pelosi is chilling."

Spanish chef Jose Andres, who has opened a few restaurants in US, also jumped into the "gazpacho" bandwagon and tweeted: "Stop by for a glass anytime. Don’t forget your mask and vaccination card!"

Greene did not explain why she thought the House Speaker would form a police force inspired by gazpacho soup, nor why it would then carry out such extensive surveillance at the heart of American democracy.

Her personal Twitter account was permanently banned in January after she repeatedly violated the platform’s rules about spreading Covid misinformation.

The politician later took to her official account and tweeted: "No soup for those who illegally spy on Members of Congress, but they will be thrown in the goulash."
