Prince William and Kate Middleton spotted enjoying NBA game during US trip

Prince William and Kate Middleton have been spotted cheering on the Boston Celtics at an NBA game against the Miami Heat.

The couple were brought into the TD Garden stadium on their first day in the city to sit court side and watch the action alongside the Celtics' owners Wyc Grousbeck and Emilia Faszalari, alongside Govenor elect Maura Healey and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu.

The Prince and Princess of Wales stood for the national anthem The Star Spangled Banner which was sung by a semi-finalist of reality TV series The Voice, but later faced some boos when they were introduced by a stadium announcer and shown on the big screen.

Others fans in the crowd chanted “USA, USA” when the royals appeared on the screens in the centre above the court.

The Daily Mirror reports that during several intervals in the game there were nods to the arrival of Prince William’s Earthshot Prize environmental project, an award he founded to celebrate contributions to sustainability, which will be hosted in the city on Friday (December 2).

Stadium digital advertising boards were lit up green to promote the awards while spectators were treated to a promotional Earthsihot video before the game.

The royal couple were seen cheering the high scoring game and clapping points as the 17-time NBA champions took on the Miami Heat.

Before the game tipped off the royals met members of the "Celtics family", including representatives of the Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation, which helps local organisations serving at risk or at need populations.

After the second quarter William and Kate watched as the Celtics honoured their tradition of recognising a “Hero Among Us”, celebrating individuals working to positively benefit the community.

Ollie Perrault, a 15-year-old from Easthampton, Massachusetts, met the royal pair after being cheered by the crowd for her work as a leading member of the Youth Climate Leadership Program since she was 11.

The royal couple were expected to depart after the third quarter but decided to stay until the end, shaking hands with fans as they left following Boston's win.

They arrived in the US on Wednesday (November 30) for a three-day trip before the Prince attends the Earthshot Prize ceremony.

The visit marks their first overseas engagement since becoming Prince and Princess of Wales in September.
