The Russian leader was described as being “very ill with blood cancer” by a Russian oligarch earlier this year. A medical expert outlined some of the visible symptoms of the disease and how these compare to those seemingly exhibited by the Russian leader.
Speculation surrounding the Russian leader’s health has been widespread since he ordered his army to invade Ukraine in February.
Since then, video footage has emerged showing him visibly shaking, looking like he has a bloated face and limping at the Victory Day parade on May 9.
A Russian oligarch with close ties to the president was also reportedly recorded speaking about Putin, saying he is “very ill with blood cancer”.
The unnamed oligarch, who is one of Russia’s 200 richest businessmen, was recorded discussing the leader’s health in mid-March in a recording obtained by US magazine, New Lines.
The magazine said the identity and voice of the oligarch had been verified.
Former MI6 head Sir Richard Dearlove was also previously recorded speaking of the leader’s health, saying he would likely enter a long-term medical facility by 2023 and not return to power once he is out.
As well as images showing him with a bloated face, footage from mid-February appears to show Putin shaking uncontrollably seemingly suffering from hand and leg tremors as he met with Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko during a meeting.
Dr Paul O’Connell told Express.co.uk there is a potential for swelling in any blood disorders as well as illnesses such as liver disease and kidney disease but this can also be caused by chemotherapy treatments.
He said: “Losing balance and bloating is likely not caused by the cancer but could be from the treatment.
“If the footage is real then I would say he is suffering from a chronic, systemic disease of some sort but whether a specific treatment could be causing it is not known.”
Speaking about Putin’s visible appearance, medical expert Dr Bharat told Express.co.uk: “The observations of Putin’s physical appearance leads one to ask questions.”
Referring to the footage of the Russian tyrant, Mr Bharat observed he had a “very round face”.
The Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Exeter Medical School said that this can be the symptom of somebody receiving steroid therapy for an illness.

If Putin has blood cancer as the oligarch claimed, Dr Bharat said the treatment would be “a cocktail of medications including steroids”.
He said: “The round face could be something or maybe nothing.
“But if it is something, it is probably steroids which leads to ask the question what he is getting the steroids for.
“It could be a number of conditions ranging from rheumatoid arthritis to myalgia or maybe even serious conditions, or may even terminal.
“However, nobody knows and we may never know.”
In March, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov refuted the claims about the president’s ill health, claiming he is in “excellent” physical shape.
