A teenage yob has been labelled a real-life Grinch after his inept attempt to karate kick a community's Christmas tree over.

The unnamed lad was seen launching an unprovoked attack on the innocent tree on CCTV after two female friends had finished posing with it.

At first, the boy tried to yank it from its stand in Kingsley Park Terrace, Northampton.

In a somewhat comical moment, his initial kung-fu kick missed, and he falls flat on the ground – prompting his mates to point and laugh.

However, this only made the angry Grinch-like teen even more determined to destroy the tree.

He is then seen rubbing his leg and grimacing before taking out his anger on the tree again, this time ripping the lights off as he runs away.

It happened at around 7.30pm on Sunday (December 3), and a police investigation has now been launched.

Businessman Ryan Michlig, 39, who put the tree outside his own vaping shop, said: “I just wanted to brighten up the area.

“When I saw what the youths did, it left me feeling deflated and sad and thinking what’s the point of doing something like that again.

"I think the more you make a place bright it lifts the area and stamps out bad behaviour. You can see on the CCTV that these kids have literally just gone for it.

"They've just attacked it, just for the point of nothing, and they've stripped all the lights off it and ruined it – we have never experienced this before despite having the shop in a challenging area.

"I should just be able to make something nice and it should stay that way."

Ryan posted the footage on Facebook and was flooded with offers from people to replace the trashed tree.

And he has even had locals popping in to help pay for a new one, as a pensioner donated £20 having seen the social media post.

He added: “All the messages of support made me realise just how wonderful this community is. There is so much love out there.”

Northamptonshire Police say they are searching for the group of six louts.

A spokesperson said: “A group of six people were seen near the tree at the time of the incident, although it is believed only two were involved in the actual damage.

“Anyone who saw a group of youths causing problems in the area at this time, witnessed the actual incident or has any information is asked to contact Northamptonshire Police, quoting incident number 22000711763."
