Speaking in the Senate on Tuesday, Mr Cornyn explained that Taiwan would be the “first domino” in China’s pursuit of domination, and they would not stop here. Mr Cornyn said: “If China is able to capture Taiwan, there’s no reason to believe that the Chinese Communist Party would stop there. China also has territorial claims against the Philippines, Japan, Vietnam and India.

“We shouldn’t view Taiwan as the CCP’s ultimate goal but as the first domino in a quest to reach regional and global dominance.

“If Taiwan falls, it will not be the end, but rather a beginning.”

The 69-year-old also described how Foreign Minister of the Republic of China, Joseph Wu said Taiwan is “democracy’s outpost, standing watch against authoritarianism”.

The Senator also quoted USINDOPACOM Commander Admiral John Aquilino in the Senate as he said: “It’s not a question of if China invades Taiwan, but when.”

Mr Cornyn continued: “Taiwan might be safe for six years, but we can’t operate on that assumption.

“We need to work with Taiwan and our friends and allies in the region to raise the cost, such that the PRC decides it’s not worth its time and effort.”

“I believe we have a legal and moral obligation to stand with Taiwan and deter China from invading.

“And we also have our own national security at stake.

“There must be a strategy to dissuade China from an attempt to seize Taiwan.

“There’s no question that time is of the essence.”

However, China very much disagreed with this suggestion.

In September, Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson Wu Qian accused “unscrupulous politicians” in Congress of “exaggerating the so-called ‘China threat’ without cause.”

Discussing the US-Taiwan relations, Wu added that the US were “playing with fire” with their attempts to strengthen these relations.

This warning comes after Vice Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff John Hyten outlined his belief that China has ramped up their weapons in preparation for a potential strike.

Speaking to CBS News, Mr Hyten said: “They launched a long-range missile.

“It went around the world, dropped off a hypersonic glide vehicle that glided all the way back to China, that impacted a target in China.

After being asked if the missile hit its desired target, Mr Hyten replied: “Close enough.”

Mr Hyten continued: “They look like a first-use weapon.

“That’s what those weapons look like to me.”
