All passengers are being advised to shelter in place whilst police attend the scene.
San Antonio Police Department confirmed there was an officer involved shooting but insist there is no threat to the public.
They tweeted: “There is a confirmed officer involved shooting at 9800 Airport Blvd.
“There is no active threat to the public.
“As a precaution, the Airport has been put on lock down.
“No other injuries are reported.”
Passengers took to social media to express their shock.
On Twitter Sports reporter Sanjay Kirpalani said: “Just had to evacuate from San Antonio airport because of an active shooter inside.
“Heart is still racing, but glad to be safe for the moment.
“Make sure you tell your loved ones that you love them.”
One flyer posted a photo showing passengers packed together following the incident, wearing masks to protect from coronavirus.
She added: “After the shooting, this is what the lock down at the San Antonio Airport looks like. I think we are safe.”
Earlier this month President Joe Biden announced plans to combat the “international embarrassment” of gun violence in the United States.
If followed deadly shootings in Georgia, California and Colorado.
The Justice Department will tighten regulations on “ghost guns”, those built from kits with untraceable origins.
President Biden commented: “Gun violence in this country is an epidemic and it’s an international embarrassment.
“This is an epidemic, for God’s sake, and it has to stop.
“Nothing I’m about to recommend in any way impinges on the second amendment.
“They’re phony arguments, suggesting that these are second amendment rights at stake, what we’re talking about.
“But no amendment to the constitution is absolute.
“You can’t shout ‘Fire!’ in a crowded movie theatre and call it freedom of speech.”
During his presidency Donald Trump remained close to the National Rifle Association (NRA) which campaigns against gun controls.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives report over 30 percent of illegal firearms seized in parts of California are “ghost guns”.
Referring to these the president added: “You can go buy the kit.
“They have no serial numbers so when they show up at a crime scene they can’t be traced, and the buyers aren’t required to pass background checks to buy the kit to make the gun.
“Consequently, anyone from a criminal to a terrorist can buy this kit and in as little as 30 minutes put together a weapon.
“I want to see these kits treated as firearms under the gun control act which is going to require that the seller and manufacturers make the key parts with serial numbers and run background checks on the buyers when they walk in to buy the package.”
