Two men shot dead in Denver on Thursday afternoon, on South Federal Boulevard, have been identified and two suspects have been arrested.
DeAngelo Tafoya, 22, and David Lara, 59, were both taken by ambulance from the 300 block of South Federal Boulevard to Denver Health Medical Center where they were pronounced dead, according to the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner. Both men died of a gun shot wound and their deaths are homicides.
Two suspects arrested in the case are identified as Elias Chavez and Tlaloc Chavez, both 22, according to police. Arrested Thursday, they are being held for investigation of first-degree murder.
The pair was arrested shortly after the shootings near the intersection of West 7th Avenue and Alcott Street, according to an arrest affidavit.
Witnesses told police that gunshots were fired from a gold or tan SUV. Officers stopped the suspects in a Honda CRV, fitting the suspect vehicle description, about five minutes after the shooting, the affidavit said.
A cartridge casing was found on the driver’s seat of the vehicle and another casing was found on the ground outside the driver’s door, the affidavit said. Elias Chavez was driving the Honda and Tlaloc Chavez was in the back seat. An infant was in a car seat in the middle of the rear passenger seat of the SUV. A third person, an unidentified 19-year-old woman, was in the front passenger seat.
A witness at a bus stop on Federal identified the two suspects after the shooting, the affidavit said. The witness told police the driver wore eye glasses and fired shots. A person in the back seat was described as wearing a “Champion” shirt. The witness also described a woman as being in the front passenger said.
The affidavit described Elias Chavez as wearing glasses and being the driver. Tlaloc Chavez was in the back seat and wearing a Champion brand shirt, according to the affidavit.
Surveillance video from an RTD bus recorded the shooting, according to the affidavit. The video footage shows shots being fired from the Honda from out of the driver’s window, as well as shots fired from the back passenger seat, at the victims as they walked toward the Honda, which had just pulled up to Federal from an alleyway.
