The UK has experienced mild weather throughout the month of January but Jim Dale, senior meteorologist at British Weather Services, predicts it will not last. The forecaster issued a stark reminder that February is “often the coldest month of the year”, predicting stronger winds, rain, occasional snow and a “lashing” of cold weather. Weather forecaster WXCharts has predicted snow in early February, with up to four inches (10cm) hitting parts of Scotland.
It has also forecast widespread rain, set to batter the UK by February 4.
WXCharts is predicting up to 30mm of rain in parts of Scotland and up to 10mm across the UK.
Speaking to Express.co.uk, Mr Dale said: “As we approach the end of the month, things do change.
“We lose the high pressure… the winds will start picking up.
“We’ll have to watch the moving targets and see what develops but I think the emphasis is basically: change of month, change of weather.
“I think once we stir things up in February, there’s every chance we get a wintry thrust from time to time, out of the north and out of the north east.
“Winter is not over. February is a wintry month, it is often the coldest month of the year.
“So it doesn’t mean it can’t strike. It can.
“But at the same time, it does look as if it’s a more Atlantic origin, so it’s not the worst of directions for general winter.
“But I expect that the Highlands and the Grampians will get back to a snow situation at times, as we push on.
“Whether it comes any lower, time will only tell – but I expect there will be some of that.”
Speaking about the recent milder weather, the forecaster said that the lack of rain in January doesn’t bode well for the rest of the year.
He said: “More than anything I think the fact that we’ve seen no rain, or virtually no rain – it has been very dry and under high pressure for the whole of January, give or take – things have got to change.
“They can’t stay like that forever.
“Maybe we’re using all our dry and sunny weather now, ahead of the Spring and Summer.

“In other words, I’m a big believer in the balancing effects of mother nature – that’s what physics does, it tries to balance things out.
“My expectation is that we start to see much more in the way of wet weather, precipitation heading towards more, at times, wintry weather.”
He added: “That’s how I see February – potentially also looking for our next major storm.
“There’s no sign of it yet, but given the fact that the doors will open there is always that chance.
“This sedate quiet tranquil weather – I don’t envisage that it will last much more than a week or so from this point. I’d be surprised if it does.
“The quiet weather is here for a time, but it will go. And that’s the expectation as we move into February.
“I’d expect February to be more mixed and volatile. Wind, rain, occasional wintry bursts is the general feel to this.
“Because we’re in February there is always an opportunity for the cold weather to come back in and give us a lashing for a day or two.”
