Ukraine’s defiant President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emerged this morning, on Saturday, following attacks during the night, trashing “fake info” about the Ukrainian army being ordered to evacuate. He said: “It’s untrue. I’m here, we are not laying down, we will protect our state. This is our land, our country, our kids, and we will defend them.” Video footage has shown explosions close to the metro station near the centre of the capital, as well as an ongoing battle for control of a more northern thermal power plant.

  • Forces in city putting up ‘incredible resistance’

Ukrainian forces defending Kyiv are putting up “incredible resistance” against Russian aggressors, according to UK Armed Forces Minister James Heappey.

He told Sky News the situation was “very grave”, adding: “The main armoured columns approaching Kyiv are still some way off. That is a testament to the incredible resistance the Ukrainian armoured forces have put up over the last 48 hours or so.

“Clearly the Russian plan is to take Kyiv but the reality is that the Ukrainians are thwarting them thus far.

“It looks like the Russian plan is nowhere near running to schedule.

“I think that will be a great cause of concern for President Putin and rather points to the fact that there was a lot of hubris in the Russian plan and that he may be awfully advised.”

Other reports do, however, suggest a large number of Russian forces have yet to be deployed into Ukraine.

Some shops working ‘heroically’ in Kyiv

Journalist Oliver Carroll, currently reporting from Kyiv, said some of the city’s shops and supermarkets are continuing to work “heroically”, despite ongoing attacks.

He wrote in a post on Twitter: “Thinking about where to get hold of food in Kyiv. A food problem. In Kyiv. Read that again. What has the world come to?

“Some shops and supermarkets are working heroically. But I never thought I’d ever be thinking about where to source food here – usually a gastronome’s delight.”

Zelenskyy denies reports arms have been laid down

Following hours of attacks on Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy came out to insist the capital would fight on and rejected reports he had ordered his military to stand down.

He, quoted in the Mail, said: “Recently, fake info was spread about me ordering our army to lay down arms and evacuate.

“It’s untrue. I’m here, we are not laying down, we will protect our state.

“This is our land, our country, our kids, and we will defend them.”
