Vladimir Putin has been warned to prepare for a furious response from the West for his “miscalculated” decision to encroach into Ukraine. Former British Armed Forces chief Lord Dannatt urged the UK and its NATO allies to unleash a fierce response against Moscow, insisting Putin had “sealed his own doom” with the decision to have his troops cross into his neighbour. Speaking to BBC, Lord Dannatt said: “When Vladimir Putin made his speech at 6am local time in Russia, he might have thought he was delivering a stark message to the West.
“But as far as I’m concerned, and I hope as far as Western leaders are concerned, that message was effectively sealing his own doom.
“He has now crossed the Rubicon, he has crossed the line, he has brought war into Europe in the 21st century.
“The maximum force of sanctions, diplomatic isolation, and the vilification of Russia must now be descended on Vladimir Putin and Russia.”
The former army chief added: “There must be no ifs, nor buts for Western leaders – this is a crossing of the line in the way in which we feared and there must be no nuanced replies, no nuanced measures.

“The whole lot must be thrown at Russia.
Russia has made a terrible miscalculation and has got to pay for this deeply and on the setback of the development of Russia for years to come if not decades.
“There must be no doubt about it.”
Explosions could be heard in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv shortly after a televised address from President Putin, while explosions were also reported in the cities of Odesa and Kharkiv.
He insisted in his address that his action was in response to threats from Ukraine, claiming Moscow was not seeking to occupy Ukraine and insisting the responsibility for bloodshed lay with the Ukrainian “regime”
