Furious Daily Star columnist Dawn Neesom erupted on LBC on Wednesday following the news the Mayor has pulled the plug on the public attending the renowned display usually attended by up to 100,000 people. She went on to express her confusion as to why the London Marathon, sports venues, and major West End theatre productions can continue with large crowds but not the fireworks display as she asked why can’t Londoners “cancel him instead” in an almighty slap down of the “woke” Mayor.

Ms Neesom slammed: “I am angry, I am fed up with this! Sadiq Khan, the ultimate damp squib isn’t he!

“Can’t we just cancel him instead of the fireworks!

“This is a man single-handedly sucking all the joy and colour out of one of the most vibrant cities in the world.”

Ms Neesom went on to suggest how the fireworks and the large crowds would be the “ultimate advert” for saying London and the UK are open for business.

She added how the display would encourage tourists back to London to get the economy back and up and running but the latest decision from City Hall throws cold water on such hopes.

The Daily Star columnist slammed how the UK and London are “already open for business” and that Sadiq Khan and has even said that himself.

“I can go and watch the London Marathon with thousands of people, I can go and watch West Ham for my sins with 60,000 people…

“I can see no reason on earth why these fireworks should be cancelled!”

She also shared fears over whether this year’s display could be similar to last year, slamming it as a “ridiculous virtue signalling fireworks and laser show” which was all about “‘thank you NHS’, ‘Black Lives Matter’, it was so woke, it was really annoying!”

In a statement following the cancellation, City Hall refused to elaborate what will be in store for this year’s display and whether it will be similar to the 2020 production which saw drones form symbols including the Black Lives Matter clenched fist and the NHS logo.

A spokesman said: “Last year’s successful show took place in a slightly different way due to the pandemic, and this year a number of exciting new options are being considered as part of our New Year’s Eve celebrations in London.

“Further details of this year’s celebration will be announced in due course.”

It comes at the London Mayor said the cross-party report from MPs on the coronavirus pandemic should serve as a “wake-up call” to the Government.

The London Mayor told PA News agency: “It’s quite clear that what some of us have been saying for some time has been found to be true, which is the Government was ill-prepared in relation to this pandemic, made mistakes during the course of this pandemic…

“And many people may have lost their lives as a consequence of that.”

He added: “It’s important the Government doesn’t wait for a public inquiry, but learns lessons in real time, and… (makes) sure that this autumn and winter isn’t as bad as last year’s.”
