Reports suggest that at least 80 people have died in clashes at a prison, just weeks after a drug gang battle killed 118 other inmates there.

The incident took place in the early hours of this morning at inside Litoral Penitentiary in Guayaquil, Ecuador.

Initial reports indicated that an explosion had taken place at the facility, with local journalist @relicheandres tweeting: "At this time, rumbles and explosions are once again heard in the Litoral Penitentiary (Guayaquil).

"The Government is NOT in control of the pressures, despite the fact that on September 29 the president @LassoGuillermo decreed a State of Exception in the prison 'system'."
