Democratic mayoral nominee Eric Adams maintained Thursday that he hopes Gov. Andrew Cuomo steps down and is quickly booted from office by lawmakers if he refuses to do so, while insisting that he has no regrets about standing alongside the scandal-scarred governor at a recent event.
“The governor must make the decision if he’s going to resign, and if he doesn’t, as I stated, the state Assembly should expeditiously move forward with the impeachment proceedings so we could get it over to the State Senate,” Adams said at a vaccination-related event in Far Rockaway, Queens.
“The determination of the governor resigning — that’s a determination he makes,” he added. “I believe he should, but I cannot make that decision for him.”
Adams, who will likely be the next mayor, said if the governor opts to stay in office, the state legislature should quickly initiate the process of ousting the third-term Democrat.
“I implore them to do it in an expeditious way, to make sure these important issues are faced, such as COVID, such as the BQE, [and] crime,” he said.
Following the release of Attorney General Letitia James’ probe that documented Cuomo’s alleged rampant, illegal sexual harassment, the former NYPD captain declared Tuesday that it’s time for the governor to leave the New York State Executive Mansion in Albany.
“It is now the duty of the New York State Assembly to take swift and appropriate action and move forward with impeachment proceedings if the Governor will not resign,” Adams said in a statement.
Asked Thursday if he now has second thoughts about standing with Cuomo during a July 14 anti-gun violence meeting in Brooklyn, the borough president said he didn’t, because it’s important to him to work with whoever the governor is to combat the “crime crisis” in his borough.
“No, he’s the governor of the state of New York. I have a crime crisis in my community, and while we deal with the crisis of what happened to the women who were involved in this issue, I have to deal with the crime crisis,” Adams said. “And I’m going to continue to be with whomever is elected to deal with these crises that are in front of us.”
During a subsequent national TV appearance, Adams said that he wants the governor to resign, but will not contact him personally to request that he do so.
“My role right now is to speak directly, and allow the Assembly to do its job,” he said on CNN Thursday afternoon, when asked if he would “pick up the phone” to beseech Cuomo to resign.
“The governor must make the final determination if he’s going to resign,” he continued. “I hope he will, but he has to make a final determination.”
The State Assembly, as of Wednesday afternoon, has more than enough votes required to impeach Cuomo.
