A worker at the Colorado supermarket where 10 people were gunned down in a mass shooting on Monday recalled the moment the gunman surrendered to police just steps away from where she was hiding.
“‘I surrender, I’m naked,’” suspected gunman Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa shouted to police about 30 minutes after the shooting began inside the King Soopers in Boulder, Maggie Montoya told CPR News.
Montoya, 25, works at the pharmacy inside the store, and was assisting with coronavirus vaccinations when she heard the first shots at about 2:30 p.m., she told The New York Times.
She told the newspaper that one person waiting on the pharmacy line was struck by gunfire.
“I just heard our store manager yell, ‘Active shooter,’ and we all scattered,” Montoya told CPR News.
Montoya said she sought safety with a coworker inside a small room attached to the pharmacy.
For the next 30 minutes or so Montoya heard sporadic bursts of gunfire throughout the store.
At about 3 p.m., after reaching out to her parents and boyfriend, a police officer spoke over the loudspeaker.
“This is the Boulder Police Department. The entire building is surrounded. I need you to surrender now,” the officer reportedly said.
That’s when Alissa, who appeared to be standing just outside the pharmacy, which is in the front of the supermarket, shouted back that he surrenders.
About twenty minutes later, after police again urged the shooter to surrender over the loudspeaker, authorities entered the store, Montoya said, and directed the gunman to keep his hands above his head.
Alissa was later seen in aerial footage being escorted by police in the parking without a shirt on.
