A senior advisor to the Cabinet Office was more than five times drink-drive limit when he was found dead in his bedroom, an inquest heard.

Andrew Timms, 47, was more than five-times over the drink-drive limit when he was discovered dead at home in Tehidy, Cornwall.

Mr Timms’ drinking escalated after his father passed away five years ago and was compounded when his mother died from cancer just three months before his own death on July 22, 2020.

He worked as a senior quality advisor in the Cabinet Office in Kingston upon Thames, London, but was signed off sick with stress, anxiety and a low mood.

Mr Timms suffered from a psychotic breakdown and ‘was drinking heavily’, Coroner Guy Davies said.

Relatives warned that ‘alcohol would get the better of him’ and ‘it would eventually kill him’, the inquest heard.

Mr Davies added: ‘This is a tragic case of a man whose career and lifestyle were destroyed by alcoholism which led to his death last summer.’

Mr Timms was admitted to hospital on numerous occasions with alcohol withdrawal and seizures and had the support of alcohol groups in Cornwall.

But he ‘minimised his alcohol use and the effects on his health and lifestyle’ and was drinking large quantities of lager and vodka.

Several empty vodka bottles were found in his home in Tehidy.

His blood alcohol level was 435ml of alcohol in his blood – the legal alcohol limit for driving is 80ml.

Mr Timms had been arrested for drink driving a month before his death last July.

Mr Davies recorded a conclusion of an alcohol related death.
