Teen plummets to his death in freak accident during ill-fated toilet stop

A teenager has died during an early morning toilet stop while on a road trip with friends.

Cameron Cumming, 19, was driving in a car with a group of pals when they stopped on the side of a road running along the Waiwawa River in Coromandel, on New Zealand's North Island, the NZ Herald reported.

Cameron reportedly lost his footing in the pitch black of the early morning and fell into a creek at 2:40am on Thursday (January 19), police said in a statement.

Authorities said their thoughts were with the teen's family following his tragic death.

Locals who live near the river, which runs directly next to the road in some places, expressed their sadness over the news.

"It was an absolute tragedy and I feel for his family but also the friends with him," one local resident said.

"His friends were frantically trying to find him but they haven’t been able to so they’ve called emergency services straight away."

Another local said they understood Cumming had hit his head falling into the water.

Emergency services confirmed they had been alerted to a water incident, where a person was missing.

New Zealand's Fire and Emergency department said they were present the scene assisting ambulance services with the rescue of a teenage male, believed to have fallen into the river.

Three fire trucks were dispatched from Whitianga and all had left the scene by 4.33am after Cameron's body had been recovered.

This isn't the first tragic incident of drowning that has devastated the Australian continent.

The news of Cameron's death comes after a dad drowned last week trying to save his 11-year-old daughter while the pair were swimming in nearby Australia.

Hero Paul Doran, from County Kildare in Ireland, died while rescuing his daughter last Wednesday evening.

The pair had been swimming in shallow water at Seven Mile Beach on Lennox Head, two hours south of Brisbane, when his daughter was swept out to sea, the Mirror reported.

Friend of the family Rose Barrett O’Donoghue said: “There are no words to lessen the pain, nothing that can be said to reduce the heartbreak the Doran family is feeling today."
