Two teachers from England are named among the best educators in the world in race for award that includes $1m prize money

Two teachers in England have made the shortlist for the world’s ‘best teacher’ award which includes prize money of one million US dollars.

Cat Davison and David Swanston made the top 50 shortlist from more than 8,000 nominations and applications.

Miss Davison, a critical thinking teacher at Sevenoaks School in Kent, prompted 120 student-led projects with her curriculum.

While Mr Swanston, a teacher of the visually impaired at St Vincent’s School in Liverpool, has been helping pupils for more than a decade with a personalised approach.

The Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize, now in its seventh year, recognises one exceptional teacher who has made an outstanding contribution. 

Founder Sunny Varkey said: ‘Their stories clearly highlight the importance of education in tackling the great challenges ahead.’

Ten finalists will be chosen in October and the winner in November.
