“Vaccines are an international operation, they’re produced by collaboration between great international scientists and we’ll continue to work with European partners to deliver the vaccine rollout. “We in this country don’t believe in blockades of any kind of vaccine or of vaccine material, [it’s] not something that this country would dream of engaging in and I’m encouraged by some of the things I’ve heard from the Continent in the same sense.”
However Ursula von der Leyen will today unveil tweaked powers to keep hold of millions of vaccines produced at an AstraZeneca plant in the Netherlands.
The European Commission President will demand the lion’s share of doses at a virtual summit of EU leaders because AstraZeneca has failed to deliver enough doses to EU nations, she says.
They will take into account Britain’s high vaccination rates and contribution to the bloc’s immunisation drive when considering shipments.
But German Chancellor Angela Merkel has warned against a full-blown vaccines war with the UK.
Last week we were branded the No1 target for an export ban by Mrs von der Leyen.
But Berlin does not want Brussels to scupper its supply of Pfizer jabs, which uses ingredients made in Yorkshire.
So far the UK has immunised 45 people in every 100, the EU has managed 13.
